Greece has once again proven to be a top destination for clean and safe beaches, earning the second-highest number of Blue Flag awards in the world for 2025.
This year, Greece received a total of 657 Blue Flags—623 for beaches, 17 for marinas, and 17 for sustainable tourism boats. The awards were announced by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (HSPN), which runs the Blue Flag program in Greece.
The Blue Flag is a well-known international award given by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) based in Copenhagen. It’s given to places that meet high standards in water quality, safety, environmental care, and services. For 2025, the Blue Flag jury recognized 4,302 beaches, 736 marinas, and 158 tourist boats in 52 countries.
Greece’s strong performance means it now represents 15% of all awarded beaches in the world. This shows not just how beautiful Greece’s coastlines are, but also how seriously the country takes protecting the environment and offering quality services to visitors.
In Greece, Crete took the top spot among regions with 153 Blue Flags. Meanwhile, Halkidiki led all municipalities with 93 awards.
The number of Blue Flag sites in Greece has been steadily rising every year, always staying above 600. This success makes Greece a shining example of how to balance tourism with caring for the environment.
